Glorious March

Lovely weather this March so nice to be able to enjoy the sun for so long (ie unlike the south Island).
Our task of minimising the waste is going well. Compost deposited via a lovely lady from the Facebook Zero Waste in NZ group. Recycling sorted as usual and only a small bag for the landfill this month but you really don't want to see how much soft plastic packaging I have. Unfortunately we'll need to keep the soft plastics with us until we visit the Waikato again as not many places in the North Island have the facilities to recycle soft plastics but at least it doesn't take up as much room as the rest of the recycling. Also finished the last bottle of washing up liquid so the transistion to soap is done. Not sure if this is the best environmentally friendly soap (unsustainable palm oil and all that) but at least it's a step in the right direction. I think.

August Haunts

Back in the north Island, enjoying the sun and increased warmth at our north Island haunts.

Matata Reserve

If you go down to the bottom of Mair Street you're sure of a big surprise.
If you go down the  grass steps and carefully cross the railway lines you'll find the walking track leading onto the Reserve.
It won't be easy under foot as the paths not officially open yet. You'll have to look hard for the signs and watch out for fallen trees but you won't be disappointed with the view you find at the top.

The Last Fritter

What a great end to the white baiting season. After a very disappointing season I wasn't sure wether I could be bothered setting up the net for the last 3 days of the season but I'm so glad I did. It might of been only enough for a feed but a feed is all you need. Such a shame everyone doesn't take that stance and there really would be enough for everyone, not just now but in the future too.

Back in the Whakatane area again. It doesn't feel that long since we were here last but actually its been nearly 6 months. Where does the time go?

Working Hard

Working hard to catch the whitebait and keep a good work life balance.

Mark seems to have it sorted at the moment but I wonder for how long that will last once people realise he is licensed to do PEW (prescribed electrical work).

Here Comes the Sun

It's always nice to wave the long cold nights of winter goodbye and welcome back the warming rays of the sun. 

I for one really appreciate the suns radiating rays and the vitamin D that they provide but not nearly as much as our poor batteries. They have had a hard time this winter having to cope with our 12v water heating and cooking plus the constant draw from the diesel heater (which I'm sure was on for twice as long as it was last year). But they didn't falter nor complain and always kept their charge up even when they were on load and pretty stressed.  

Having worked hard all winter it's now their time to bask in the sun again and I think I'll go and join them and top up my vitamin D as well.

Wet September

Thank goodness for sunny Whakatane, hot showers at  Matata (DOC), our No 1 ( First Love) Pop at Thorton and a few feeds of whitebait.
